Sounds like a good way to get good stories and maybe some bad information. [ A pause. ] Joker might have told you about the time I started telling everyone I was a duck. [ Because he didn't stop talking about it for oh… two years. ]

...so that's what he meant by that. [there's...half a story there.] I came in at the middle and heard 'Nash is actually a Duck' and I wasn't sure I wanted to hear the rest of it.

...is it a good story?

I was nineteen and I'd never been that drunk before. In the Temple Guard there was always the expectation of dignity.

[ That's the basic gist of it. Nash doesn't remember a whole lot about what actually happened that night. ]

The real story is that it's been almost twenty years and he doesn't have any new material.

Oh, I would imagine they wouldn't be that impressed with a recruit who happens to be a lightweight. Clearly you got over it, with time.

[it's true, though, even if the logical excuse is that Joker hasn't seen him in twenty years. Joker never has new material]

...I can probably count on one hand the number of actual stories he has. I've heard all of them repeated so many times I can probably tell them myself by now. Just not that one, he only brought it up after running into you again and I never asked after it.

I guess it's nice to know that my reputation in Caleria is free for me to ruin.

Yes, we've established you're very survivable. Don't worry, I only perform for a crowd. [ He makes a theatrical gesture with his hand, but his expression stays level. He isn't that drunk. ] You know Nadir offered me a job, after the war? I might have lied about not having one.

[ He takes a sip, shrugging. ]

He did claim to have an eye for talent, didn't he? Which didn't stop him from torturing me, but what can you do. [morale, etc. It worked once and never again.] What, the idea of the constant spotlight not as appealing as it sounds on paper?

I don't think my boss would like it. [ And hey, he already gets to act for his job. ] Also he made me play a sheep.

[Geddoe actually almost chokes on his drink] ...he made you what?

[he does remember being off on a mission during the time Nash was presumably acting in a play back at Budehuc, something something missed the chance to see something funny, and then forgot about it. So being reminded now...damn, he really did miss his chance.]

I had three lines, I think. [ He takes another sip of his drink, straightfaced. ] They were all "baaa."

At least you could probably memorize those. [snort!] What the hell play was that?

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf." It's about someone who lies so much that on one believes him when he's telling the truth.

Ah, that old chestnut. [and, hence, the sheep. The idea of Nash in a sheep outfit still makes him snort under his breath, he can't stop]

I would make some sort of crack about Nadir casting people in roles to help them learn something but I don't think you can learn a lot from a sheep.

Were you involved in that war at all? I thought he had a lot of guts putting on a play using historical events that people present might have actually participated in.

Not that part of it. I was assigned to Dunan back in '60, though. [ A pause, as he mulls something over. For once, he doesn't drink. ]

And Sierra is my wife.

[boy it's a good thing he wasn't drinking just at that moment, there would be ale everywhere. Geddoe freezes in place and stares. He was wandering the continent, still, at the time of the Dunan Unification War, stayed out of it but knew enough of it to know the major players.]

[it's all he can say, even though he's pretty sure Nash is absolutely not shitting him. Sure puts their earlier discussion of the longsuffering wife into perspective, doesn't it?]
